musical biology with a modern touch

Laken van der Syl (formerly known as Linnaea) executes her musical practice as a songwriter, producer, and vocalist with a primarily digital approach. Songwriting, composing, and original sound design are her personal means of cultivating a practice of multi-dimensional sonic auto-ethnography. Laken van der Syl's sonic works blend experience and theory into a color-driven, textured audio experience.

With an interest in the body’s relationship to sound, and sound’s inherently visual manifestations rendered via her synesthesia, van der Syl's sonic work integrates strong visual extrapolations, merging lived experience with multi-stream creative expression. She has composed scores for independent choreographers and online fashion campaigns. van der Syl has been honored with her Fulbright fellowship, as well as being awarded a pass to the 2020 and 2022 Cannes Film Festivals for her essay regarding the future of cinema scoring. She has released two albums and one e.p. alongside her self-directed visuals.

"Her grasp on what it means to make “ethereal” soundscapes is ever-present. So much of the album feels like my body is being segmented from itself, in layers. It sounds like floating...."

"It is so hard to stay in the same vein sonically while pushing limits and reinventing yourself. With Eat Your Lover, she has done so beautifully. Her command of percussion remains unmatched. Vocals like an early morning mist, so crisp and light but still so many mysteries."
